Monday 11/30/09
Today’s class was very simple, but very helpful. It was about presentation and storytelling. I was extremely nervous when I heard the word "presentation" because i'm terrified of presenting in front of class. The exercise was to present two truths and one lie about yourself, which was fun. I came up to the class, (almost fainting!) and presented my two truths and one lie. Before I went up I wanted to be creative and fool the class with my truths and lies, but the first things that gave me away was my eye contact. It taught me how to lie better and be aware of my body language. Jimmy gave us advice on when we present our work in the future, we have to be honest, but if we’re not we have to be convincing. Afterwards, the whole class had to tell a story about the past week, which was harder than I thought; overall, it was helpful and fun!

Kim Baer
On Thursday November 12 we were required to go see Kim Baer’s speech at the music hall in cal state la. To be honest, I expected this presentation to be dull, but I was totally wrong. It inspired me to do so much. I don’t know if it was just me, but I felt such great energy from Kim Baer. She had a motherly affect on me for some reason. I loved that. After her presentation, I waited and asked her "what is your creative process?” I was so intrigued about her answer because I had no idea about my own creative process. Her answer was simple she said "well, it depends on the project because that’s how I begin to brainstorm and eventually end up with an idea". I was disappointed because I expected her to go into details and give me advice, but she didn’t. Even though that happened I loved her, she showed us her weaknesses and not brags about her successes. I called her presentation a nice gunshot of inspiration! =p

Today’s class was great! I was extremely nervous because we had homework due. Our homework was to create an idea for a game. It took me about 3 days to come up with 20 sketches and my idea. It was an anxiety attack waiting to happen. I went into class expecting tragedy, but I had to control myself and FOCUS. Fortunately, Mr. Jimmy Moss started talking about the graphic design world and the reality of becoming a graphic designer. He answered a lot of my questions, such as, how much should we charge? How do we present our work? Who are we presenting our work to? It was absolutely grand, I learned so much in his lecture! Right after he completed his lecture, we had to present our work/homework. The moment I was dreading! The presentations started and I was waiting for my turn, my turn was next. I started presenting and I wasn’t sure what I was saying. It was like I was another person because I was extremely nervous and afraid of criticism. Little did I know that jimmy would love it! He even said “this could be a senior project”. That truly made my day! =]

Monday 10/5/09
Monday, was by far my favorite class. We learned so much, but what really struck me was that I learned so much about myself. Today’s lecture was about brainstorming. We broke down brainstorming in general and analyzed what brainstorming was. We had to create our own brainstorm. I had a hard time coming up with a topic, but then realized I could write about my biggest issue: being pessimistic. I was able to break down this problem and even come up with solutions. I thought it was extremely fun doing this exercise because I haven’t done a “brainstorm” in years. It was very beneficial.

Wednesday 9/30/09
On Wednesday, we explored the artist mind. What I mean by this is how we interpret art in our own eyes. For example, we looked at different photographs and we had to say what we saw, none of us could just name out what we saw, but what we assumed what was going on in the photo. I found it to be very interesting because in my own head I thought I was able to break down and analyze this particular photo, but I couldn’t! All I could think of was obvious findings in a photo such as, body language, emotion, lighting, etc. I could not just name out two women, a coat, a table, earrings, etc. all these things were right in front of my face and all I could think of was, why are these women in this position? Or why do they look concerned? It was a very interesting class!

Monday 9/28/09
On the first day of class (Monday), my expectations were nothing but pessimistic. Little did I know that Monday would be the day that would change my life and answer all my questions about my future. In the beginning of class we were asked to write about what we thought this class was about and what we are going to learn. I had no clue. Of course, the name of the course is self explanatory, but I couldn’t define it in my own words. Afterwards, we were given an apple and we had to analyze an apple like we’ve never have. I smelled it, tasted it, and heard it; I didn’t know where this was going, besides the fact that I looked crazy. Eventually we had to explain to our partner about our apple, as if he were blind. This was called the beginning of our creative thinking process. The rest of the time, our professor jimmy moss explained every little thing about this course. His explanation motivated me to go above and beyond in order to succeed. Graphic design is my passion, but I have to do anything in order to become a better artist. This class will teach us the fundamentals we need for our future.
